Just thought you would like to know…
Michael is involved in various groups including CHAA (Canadian Harvard Aircraft Assn.) Dive Recovery team, BAAC (British Aviation Archaeological Council) and NAS (Nautical Archaeological Society). Their primary interest is to search, locate and identify WWII-era Harvard training aircraft.
The Harvard aircraft is a single seat advanced training aircraft and was the principal aircraft used by the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, a massive air-training program. At the plan’s peak, there were 107 schools and 184 ancillary units at 231 sites in Canada, and, during this period, over a 1,000 crashes occurred, many in the abundant lakes in Canada. The purpose of the Dive recovery team is to locate and identify these crashed aircraft and recover missing airman, many whom are still with their aircraft and arrange for a military burial.
This team consists of professional divers that have dedicated their time to these projects and have enrolled in the Nautical Archaeology Survey Course. They are legally permitted to survey aircraft locations, which the CHAA-Recovery Team has chosen. The CHAA-Recovery Team is currently reviewing eight potential projects.
